Many people use electric toothbrushes, but I’m not sure everyone takes the time to read the manual—I know I didn’t. Today, I finally did, and I want to share what I learned so you can get the most out of your toothbrush.
FYI: In this post, I reviewed the manual for the Philips Sonicare, but most electric toothbrushes work in a similar way (vibrating or sonic motion)—except for Oral-B, which uses an oscillating motion, and a few other smaller brands. So, if you’re using a vibrating(sonic) electric toothbrush, this post is for you!
Let’s start by watching this video:
1. Wet the bristles and apply a small amount of toothpaste.
- ✅ Yes, I’ve been doing this correctly.
2. Place the toothbrush bristles against your teeth at a slight angle (45 degrees), pressing gently so the bristles reach the gumline or slightly beneath it.

Note: Keep the center of the brush in contact with the teeth at all times.
- ✅ The Philips Sonicare is designed to help users follow the Modified Bass Technique, the brushing method recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA). Following this technique is crucial for effective cleaning.
3. Press the power button to turn on the Philips Sonicare.
4. Gently keep the bristles placed on the teeth and gumline. Brush with small back-and-forth motions to allow the bristles to reach between the teeth. Continue this motion throughout your brushing cycle.
- ✅ Move along the teeth and gumline, but do not scrub—scrubbing can damage the gums.
5. To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush handle slightly upright and use several vertical overlapping strokes on each tooth.

6. Brush in sections:

- 30 seconds in each section.
7. After completing the brushing cycle, you can also brush your tongue, with the toothbrush on or off, as you prefer.
The Modified Brushing Technique is the most effective way to keep your gums and teeth healthy, and the Philips Sonicare is one of the best electric toothbrushes to support this method. I hope this post is helpful!
